Sheep farming

Texel is mainly associated with sheep farming: Texel, Schapeneiland. The Texel sheep breed “de Tesselaar” is world famous. Once upon a time, sheep's cheese and wool were Texel's most important export products. The Texel sheep's cheese was already famous far beyond Texel in the Middle Ages. Nowadays sheep farming is mainly kept for dairy production (cheese) and consumption (lamb meat) because the shearing of sheep now costs almost as much as the wool yields.

Texel Pielsteert

The museum shows a film of sheep farming on Texel around 1948. In addition, everyone can see how the Texel Pielsteert – the old Texel breed of sheep – has developed over time. Our tour guides can tell you much more about this.
